Virginia, South Carolina winners on Day 2 of CWS

Scott Wingo won the game for South Carolina, and they play Virginia next.

Top-seeded Virginia scratched out 4 runs in the last two innings, and gave up a run in the ninth inning to beat California 4-1 in the early game on Sunday. Danny Hultzen was fantastic for the Cavaliers, pitching 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball. Hultzen was the second overall pick in the recent MLB Draft, going to the Seattle Mariners. John Hicks broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the 7th inning, with a RBI single. Virginia plays South Carolina next on Tuesday. California meets Texas A&M, also on Tuesday.

South Carolina beat Texas A&M on a walk-off single by Scott Wingo to beat the Aggies 5-4 in the night game. South Carolina won the 2010 College World Series by the same fashion, a walk-off win. Whit Merrifield’s game winner beat UCLA to win the title.
