USA beats Jamaica, advances to Gold Cup semifinals

USA beat Jamaica 2-0 in the Gold Cup quarterfinals.

The USA soccer team beat Jamaica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals 2-0, and advances to the semifinals. USA played possibly their best game of the tournament, with sound defense and effective offense. They will play Panama in the semifinals. Panama beat El Salvador in the other quarterfinal Sunday night in penalty kicks. In the 49th minute, Jermaine Jones broke the tie with help from Jamaican defender Jermaine Taylor. Jones’ shot got deflected by Taylor, and went the opposite direction of the sprawling Donovan Ricketts, the LA Galaxy goalkeeper in the MLS. Clint Dempsey added a goal in the 80th minute to cap off an impressive victory for the Americans. The only bad news from the match was the injury to Jozy Altidore, who was substituted for in the 12th minute with a strained hamstring. USA plays Panama Wednesday night.

They played very well, it was their best game of the tournament. I thought Jones had a great game and was the man of the match – good to see him starting to shine. I think Altidore will be all right, but Agudelo played very well in his place.
