McIlroy extends lead with incredible round

Rory McIlroy backed up a strong first round with another great round.

Rory McIlroy shot a 66 after an opening round 65 to extend his lead and move to 11 under, heading into the weekend with a six shot lead. McIlroy became the first person EVER in the 111 year history of the US Open to ever get to -13, and reaching that feat in the second round made it even more impressive. Y.E. Yang finished at -5 after Friday. Despite a double-bogey on the 18th hole to drop to -11, McIlroy’s first 36 holes was nonetheless impressive. Among the players missing the cut was former champion Ernie Els, young American Rickie Fowler, and Australian Adam Scott. Phil Mickelson finished Friday at 1 over after shooting a 69, but is 12 strokes behind Mickelson and a comeback looks nearly impossible.
