Serena returns in hard fought win

Serena returned but not without trouble, winning in three tight sets.

Much like her older sister Venus, Serena Williams won, but not without a few roadblocks along the way. The younger Williams sister beat Tsvetana Pironkova 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round in Eastbourne, England in her first match in nearly a year. Serena, the defending Wimbledon champion, looked nothing like the Serena of old, losing the first 5 games of the first set, then finally settled down and held for her only game of that set. She looked better in the second and third sets, winning them fairly easily, but still obviously needs work in order to defend her title at Wimbledon, which starts June 20th. Venus Williams beat Andrea Petkovic Monday 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 in her first match since the Australian Open. Serena Williams likely plays Vera Zvonareva in the second round, a tough test for the 13-time Grand Slam winner.
