Venus wins in return over familiar foe

Venus Williams beat Andrea Petkovic Monday in her return to tennis.

Venus Williams beat Andrea Petkovic 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 in her first match since the the Australian Open in Eastbourne, England. Familiar matchup? That’s because Williams last played when she retired after one game in her third round match with Petkovic at the Australian Open in January due to a hip injury. Venus hopes that the victory will spur her to a successful Wimbledon, which starts June 20th. The 30-year old was very rusty in her first match back, but fought off the tough German to advance to the second round. Williams is now ranked #32 in the world, but is still capable of performing at the highest level, even at her “advanced” age, or advanced only in tennis. Her sister Serena makes a most highly-profiled return as well, as she has been out since shortly after last year’s Wimbledon tournament, where she is the defending champion. She plays Tuesday against Tsvetana Pironkova in her first match back in nearly a year.
