French Open Day 11 review and look ahead: Men

Day 11 notable completed matches

#1 Rafael Nadal defeated #5 Robin Soderling 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3)

#4 Andy Murray defeated Juan Ignacio Chela 7-6, 7-5, 6-2

Reaction

I was surprised how easily Rafa advanced against Soderling. I picked Rafa in 4 sets, but the announcers kept repeating what might have been a big factor and an advantage for Nadal: The wind. The cool, windy conditions favored Nadal’s topspin approach, and not Soderling’s flat hitting groundstrokes. That might have been a factor, but either way Nadal was the better player on this day. Murray played well, especially on a bad ankle (He joked that he had more pills in him than Ozzy Osbourne), but Chela gave his all and the first two sets were tight all the way through. After the second set though, Chela looked defeated and had given his all, and Murray breezed through the third, and now we have a great semifinals matchup in place between Murray and Nadal.
