Dhoni leads India to Cricket World Cup win

India, led by captain M.S. Dhoni, won their first title since 1983.

In a thrilling final in Mumbai, India, the hometown team took the prize. India beat Sri Lanka, punctuated by captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s six to win the trophy for the first time in 28 years for India. Sri Lanka scored 274 runs in the first innings, much in part to Mahela Jayawardene’s century. Tillakaratne Dilshan scored 33 runs and finished the tournament as the leading run-scorer. Before Sri Lanka’s impressive 35 runs in the final two overs, they looked weak and had a run rate of under 3 for much of the first 10 overs. Sri Lanka beat New Zealand on Tuesday to reach the final. India won a hyped up match against bitter rival Pakistan to advance. All hope for India looked lost when Virender Sehwag scored no runs, and was retired via lbw in ony 2 balls. Indian hero Sachin Tendulkar fell short of his 100th ODI century, scoring 18 runs in 12 balls after a strong start. Not all was lost though, as Gautam Gambhir just missed a century, with 97 runs, and Dhoni led the charge, scoring 91 runs, including the winning six, to send Indian fans into a frenzy, as the last time India had won was in 1983 in England. Tendulkar’s future in ODIs is in doubt, as the 37-year old batsman has not decided whether or not he will continue playing internationally. The win was huge for Tendulkar, and should he retire from ODIs, this would likely be the best way: On top. The 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup is in Melbourne, Australia.
