Lester named Red Sox opening starter

Jon Lester was named the starter for Boston's regular season opener, on April 1st.

Wednesday, Red Sox manager Terry Francona tabbed Jon Lester as Boston’s Opening Day starter. The Red Sox open their season against the World Series losers, the Texas Rangers. They play on April 1st in Arlington, Texas, at 4:35 Eastern Time, 3:35 local time. This will be Lester’s first Opening Day start of his career. He was fantastic in 2010, compiling a 19-9 record and a 3.25 ERA. Lester replaces fellow starter Josh Beckett, who was the Opening Day starter in 2009 and 2010. In one of the better stories in baseball, Lester, 27, was diagnosed with lymphoma, but came back in 2007 to lead the Red Sox to a World Series championship, and threw a no-hitter against the Kansas City Royals in 2008.
