Kim Clijsters wins 2011 Australian Open

#3 seed and tournament favorite Kim Clijsters defeated China’s Li Na for the 2011 Australian Open title 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Li would have made history for the first Asian and first Chinese woman to win a Grand Slam. Once considered a one-dimensional player, winning 3 US Opens, and no other Slams, Clijsters proved her doubters wrong. After dominating in the first set, Li appeared to get frustrated numerous times, shouting to the crowd and to her husband and coach. The win was Clijsters’ 4th Grand Slam Title, and all four have come since she returned after a maternity leave. Clijsters may or may not have played her last Australian Open after saying that 2011 might be her last season on tour.
