Australian Open Day 11 review and look ahead: Men

Completed Day 11 matches

#3 Novak Djokovic defeats #2 Roger Federer 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, 6-4

Thoughts: I said yesterday that this could go either way. Even though the match was only 3 sets, this one was closer than it seemed. Djokovic was very impressive and showed little fear, although faltered a tiny bit at the end, and had not Federer erred many times, he probably would’ve lost the set. He needs to get that straightened out for the final. Both Andy Murray and David Ferrer, who play the second semifinal tomorrow, are not going to

The finalist was impressive against Federer, but will he win it all?

hit many errors, and Djokovic will have to have his serve going good like it did today. I really think that is his biggest improvement since bursting onto the scene. I really like his chances, although the short-lived triumph might not be long, with the French Open awaiting. Federer was clearly not at his best, and seemed a little tired, which seemed strange after a relatively easy 3 set win over countryman and #19 seed Stanislas Wawrinka. He’ll have plenty of time to recuperate, but this one will leave a mark and cast more doubt if he can still beat the elite players.

Day 12 match and prediction

#5 Andy Murray vs. #7 David Ferrer

Prediction: Murray in 5 sets

Why: We all saw what Ferrer did to Nadal, Rafa injured or not. He made the number one player in the world run, and run hard. Ferrer was smacking the ball all over the court, and if he can continue that trend, watch out. Then again, Murray is playing some great tennis, very much like Djokovic, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him advance to his second straight Australian Open Final.
