Australian Open Day 10 review and look ahead: Men

Day 10 completed matches

#5 Andy Murray defeats Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-5, 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3

#7 David Ferrer defeats #1 Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-2, 6-3

Thoughts: I’m really impressed by how Murray has played this tournament, and even the 3rd set loss wasn’t a bad sign. Dolgopolov had knocked off Jo-Wilfred Tsonga and Robin Soderling in consecutive matches, so a win in 4 sets was pretty impressive. Nadal, however, will not be getting his “Rafa Slam”, hindered by a left hamstring injury suffered in the second game of the first set. Kudos to Ferrer, though, who played very well throughout the match, and was hitting the ball in from all over the court, not to mention his speed on returns off of Nadal, often for winners. The Murray vs. Ferrer match should be interesting, but I’ll have to think about my prediction. You’ll see it tomorrow. I better, as I picked Nadal in straight sets, while it was the opposite.

Day 11 match and prediction

#2 Roger Federer vs. #3 Novak Djokovic

Prediction: Federer in 5 sets

Why: Ooh, that was a tough call. Both Federer and Djokovic are playing some great tennis,

Their semifinal match Thursday in Melbourne will definitely be a wrestle until the end.

and whoever wins will have an easier time against either Ferrer or Murray. This one really could go either way. In head to head, Federer leads 13-6, but Djokovic absolutely destroyed #6 seed Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals, and I don’t think he’s ever looked this good, dropping only one set this whole tournament. This might be the match of the tournament, men’s or women’s. And that’s saying something.
