Australian Open Day 8 review and look ahead: Women

She plays Francesca Schiavone in a tough test.

Notable Day 8 completed matches

#3 Kim Clijsters defeats Ekaterina Makarova 7-6 (7-3), 6-2

#25 Petra Kvitova defeats #22 Flavia Pennetta 3-6, 6-3, 6-3

#2 Vera Zvonareva defeats Iveta Benesova 6-4, 6-1

#12 Agnieszka Radwanska defeats Shuai Peng 7-5, 3-6, 7-5

Thoughts: No real upsets, as I’m really not surprised that Kvitova beat Pennetta. Kvitova has been red hot, beating Samantha Stosur, but I have a feeling that this is it for her. Clijsters, as always, was fantastic, but seemed to struggle a bit in the first set. No worries in the second set, however, winning 6-2 over Ekaterina Makarova. Zvonareva just crushed Benesova in the first set, and the second was close, but I’m not worried. Radwanska looked shaky in the second set, but ultimately came through against Shuai Peng.

Notable Day 9 matches and predictions

#9 Li Na vs. #30 Andrea Petkovic

Prediction: Li in 3 sets

#1 Caroline Wozniacki vs. #6 Francesca Schiavone

Prediction: Wozniacki in 2 sets
