Australian Open Day 3 review and look ahead: Men

If Day 2 was all about favorites winning easily, Day 3 was the complete opposite.

Notable completed Day 3 matches

#8 Andy Roddick defeats Igor Kunitsyn 7-6 (9-7), 6-2, 6-3

#2 Roger Federer defeats Gilles Simon 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3

#9 Fernando Verdasco defeats Janko Tipsarevic 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-0), 6-0

#3 Novak Djokovic defeats Ivan Dodig 7-5, 6-7 (10-8), 6-0, 6-2

#6 Tomas Berdych defeats Philipp Kohlschreiber 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4

#12 Gael Monfils defeats Frederico Gil 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2

Tommy Robredo defeats #16 Mardy Fish 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3

Thoughts: Besides Fish, no favorite lost, but there certainly were some close calls, especially Federer, who was previously 0-2 against Simon. Almost every favorite dropped at least a set, and Day 3 was certainly interesting, a stark contrast to an almost-boring Day 2 at the Australian Open.

Notable Day 4 matches and predictions

#1 Rafael Nadal vs. Ryan Sweeting

Prediction: Nadal in 3 sets

Juan Martin Del Potro vs. #21 Marcos Baghdatis

Prediction: Del Potro in 5 sets

#4 Robin Soderling vs. Gilles Muller

Prediction: Soderling in 3 sets

#13 Jo-Wilfred Tsonga vs. Andreas Seppi

Prediction: Tsonga in 3 sets.

#5 Andy Murray vs. Illya Marchenko

Prediction: Murray in 3 sets

#7 David Ferrer vs. Michael Russell

Prediction: Ferrer in 3 sets

Match to Watch

Del Potro vs. Baghdatis

Why: Del Potro is still not 100%, and Baghdatis is a good test. Should be fun to watch.
