Australian Open Day 2 review and look ahead: Women

Notable completed Day 2 matches

#2 Vera Zvonareva defeats Sybille Bammer 6-2, 6-1

#5 Samantha Stosur defeats Lauren Davis 6-1, 6-1

#3 Kim Clijsters defeats Dinara Safina 6-0, 6-0

#7 Jelena Jankovic defeats Alla Kudryavtseva 6-0, 7-6 (7-5)

Ekaterina Makarova defeats #19 Ana Ivanovic 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8)

#12 Agnieszka Radwanska defeats Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-4 4-6 7-5

Wow, was I wrong. I picked the Clijsters-Safina match as one to watch, and boy, was I way off. Safina obviously isn’t the player she was only 2 years back. As for Zvonareva, Clijsters, and Sam Stosur, their results weren’t surprising in the slightest. Ivanovic going down was a bit of a shock for me considering how well she has played recently and into the beginning of 2011. But really no real shockers on Day 2. I was quite interested by Kimiko Date-Krumm and the 40-year old holding her own against the 12th seed Radwanska. Very close match.

Match to watch

Schiavone vs. Marino

Why: Schiavone struggled in the first round, and had to go to a third set there. She’s gotta be tired, and Marino isn’t a bad opponent. In fact, I picked Marino to win. So there’s my upset special. But watch the match to be sure. It could go either way.
