Streak no more

Stanford celebrated a historic win Thursday, beating top-seeded UConn, snapping the Huskies’ NCAA record for most consecutive wins, with 90. UConn had overtaken the UCLA Bruins for the record with 88. Coincidentally, both historic streaks had the teams beaten before by another team see the streak end, by that same team. If that doesn’t make sense, UConn previously lost to Stanford in the 2008 Final Four, and Stanford beat UConn to end the streak. The same thing happened with UCLA, as they previously lost to Notre Dame and their streak was ended by the Fighting Irish. Stanford won in convincing fashion, 71-59. The Cardinal had previously given UConn trouble, most obviously shown in last year’s National Championship, where Stanford had a chance to beat UConn, but the Huskies fought back at the end for a 53-47 victory. Superstar Maya Moore struggled, scoring only 14 points on 5-15 shooting for Connecticut. They never led in the game, marking the first time that happened since 2005.
